Tuesday 1 February 2011 Public Service Project

It is important that every member of your group be thoroughly familiar with organization you have chosen. Hence:

Due at the end of class from each member of your group: 200 words that explain the history of your organization, its purpose / objectives and why this is an organization you care to support.

Take a bit of time to do some research, if you have not yet done so.
Start thinking about dividing up your work.
1. the public service announcement (who is editing?)
2. the speaker? who can best deliver the content? Are you filming or doing this live?
3. Who is designing / making the products? or brochure? or poster? These should be as close to professional looking as possible.
4. Events budget. You need some activity to raise awareness of your organization. Be realistic and imaginative. (Really that is not a paradox.) How much is this going to cost? advertising? space rental? caterers? speaker? Activities? Who might donate? What are you charging? How many volunteers do you need to make this successful?
5. You need a contact list. Who specifically liaises for this organization within our community?

    Planned Parenthood

I feel that Planned Parenthood is important because this program serves as assistance to the young teens and or adults who are or can possibly be pregnant. The leaders in this program counsel the woman to teach them fundamentals that’ll help them to provide the proper care and healthy environment for the child. The program itself is a great help to the community of woman who struggle with becoming a parent and having such a large responsibility. The counselors help the women to decide whether they want to have the child and take care of it, have an abortion, or even give the child up for adoption. The effects that this program has a positive affect on the community because young girls who don’t know what to do in situations like this would get the help and guidance they need. As well as if they don’t feel that they can trust anyone else they can come to Planned Parenthood and talk with a representative confidentially. For women to go here and get help shows how they want help and if they aren’t ready to have a child they can take care of the situation before hand. Instead of having a child that they can’t take care of and living in poverty. Programs such as these are very beneficial in providing awareness about disease, infections and other viruses that are rapidly spreading throughout societies such as here in Rochester.

  2. The objective of Planned Parenthood is to give insight and help about sexually active individuals. Planned parenthood gives women many options to help them with their sexual lifestyles. The give women the assistance they need to be safe. Planned Parenthood has many locations that gives emergency contraception and teaches women about abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy. In a sense Planned Parenthood teaches women to be responsible for their actions as a sexually active woman. I support Planned Parenthood because it gives women who don’t have an outlet to talk about sex with, a place that is confidential and trustworthy. Although I have my reasons for agreeing and disagreeing with abortion, I think that the option should be provided by a great organization whose goals are to better the sexually active world. I also like how they provide free contraception for those who slip up and make mistakes. STD’s are a major part of the world today, and I appreciate how Planned Parenthood gives awareness to the consequences that come with reckless sexual activity. Planned Parenthood gives counseling to those women who are having problems in their sex life; problems such as pregnancy and birth control. Overall this organization has the ability to prevent many painful events from happening.

  3. Autism Speaks is an organization for research, awareness and outreach towards families, government and the public. Bob Wright founded it in 2005 with his wife Suzanne. Bob Wright is the vice chairman of General Electric whose grandson was diagnosed with autism.

The organization soon after attracted a powerful board of directors including world-class scientific advisers and a ton of celebrities including Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and many others. It has since merged with existing autism organizations, National Alliance for Autism Research, Cure Autism now and Autism Coalition for Reasearch and education, and has raised millions of dollars. Since February of 2009, the organization’s mascot has been Wubbzy from Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!

The activities that it conducts include both research and awareness. The research that they fund is mostly in etiology, biology, diagnosis and autism therapies. They fund the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange, which is a DNA repository and family registry available to worldwide researchers.

The awareness activities that they conduct include an annual autism walk in Long Island. In October of 2006, the walk raised $2 million with 20,000 participants. Suzanne Wright went on The Today Show to discuss their Ad council campaign. They also sponsored and distributed the short film Autism Every Day.

  4. The American Animal for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866. He wanted to “provide effective means for the protection of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. It is one of the largest humane societies in the world. There objective is based on the belief that all animals should be treated with respect and kindness at the hands of humans, and to ensure that they receive just treatment they should be protected by law. At first the society focused mainly on livestock like horses and cattle, they also care for dog’s cats and other “home” pets. When this organization was started because of some of the ways dogs and other animals were being used for mankind. In the late 1800’s dogs were used to pull small carts, treadmills, and would not provide food, shelter, and leaving animals in the garbage cans to search for their own food. This organization deserves our support because animals cannot reach out and protect themselves, they cannot get a house and car to make life easier. They depend on people and sometimes people take their needs for granted thinking only of themselves. They are like babies who need our help to survive if you do not want the responsibility of a pet then do no get one, and leave them for someone else who will love and support them.

  5. Over three decades ago, in 1979, attorneys interested in advancing the position of animals in the legal system teamed up and formed the Animal Legal Defense Fund. ALDF aims to more strongly enforce anti-cruelty laws and urge more humane treatment of animals in all corners of life in America. They go about this by filing never before seen lawsuits involving animal rights and providing free legal assistance to prosecutors handling animal cruelty cases. They also encourage the federal government to take enforcing existing animal protection laws more seriously. They also educate the public through seminars, workshop, and other efforts to outreach.
I chose to support this non-profit organization because I am very passionate about animals. They are a huge part of my life and it bothers me knowing that so many of them are abused and literally have no voice to tell anyone, and receive the justice they deserve. People who abuse animals generally do not face very long jail terms, because there are not enough laws protecting animals. A man who cuts off a cat’s paws should be sentenced to more than 45 days in jail and a $200 fine. These people can not get away with this torture without any serious consequences, and if we do not create any, we are only allowing this abuse to continue.

The American Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded to provide effective means to prevent animal cruelty in the United States. Henry Bergh founded this organization in 1866. This is one of the largest humane societies in the world and was founded in the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatments by humans; they are protected under law as we humans are also. The ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with program that extends our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We boast more than 1 million supporters across the country. ASPCA fulfills a mission through nonviolent approaches, in which we are granted legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals. Our organization provides a local and national leadership in 3 major areas: caring for pets and their parents, provide positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving victims of animal cruelty. Team ASPCA is our national endurance training and fundraising program dedicated to helping animal lovers walk, run, or cycle toward helping ASPCA provide life-saving programs and services to millions of animals nationwide. Members of the team participate in world-renowned marathons, half marathons, cycling and other major endurance events across the country to raise funds, support our mission, and raise awareness of ASPCA. With team ASPCA you can make a positive impact on the lives of animals in your community.

The organization my group has chose to do is International Planned Parenthood Federation. Some things about this organization is they are spread all across the world Africa, Arab, European, South Asia, and western Hemisphere. They accept volunteers and donations. A governing council that contains thirty members that meet up twice a year runs them. People from each membership committee represent all regions. Volunteers from each association elect their own governing body. IPPF was formed in 1952 at the Third International Conference on Planned Parenthood in Bombay, India. It was the result of campaigning by a handful of brave and angry women, including Margaret Sanger from America, Elise Ottesen-Jensen from Sweden and Dhanvanthi Rama Rau from India, who were imprisoned for their assertion that women had the right to control their own fertility.
They were determined to work with different cultures, traditions, laws and religious attitudes to improve lives for women around the world. The IPPF had a directory listing in 43 countries in which family planning advice was obtainable in 1956. Today IPPF is still leading a ‘brave and angry’ stance with regard to people’s right to access to good sexual and reproductive health care and services. As these important choices and freedoms are seriously threatened, we are needed now more then ever.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

ASPCA is recognized as the national animal welfare organization. The organization was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866. It’s is a privately funded not-for-profit corporation. There mission is boldly told as, “To provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States”. The organization provides local and national leadership through three ways: Caring for pet parents and pets, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals and serving victims of animal cruelty. They take these goals into affect by legally having the authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals; all through non-violent approaches. They have over one million supporters across the country.
ASPCA is an organization that should be supported for all the right reasons. If you’re a pet-lover or if you’re compassionate in justice, this organization should be supported by you and me. I give my help to this organization out of kindness towards my fellow brothers, male dogs. I believe a mans best friend is a dog. They always have our backs, so why not give them some love right back. It’s only the more morale and righteous action to do.

    Elephant Sanctuary- Tennessee

The Elephant Sanctuary was founded in 1995 in Hohenwald Tennessee. They provide a safe place for the elephant to live. There are elephants who are sick or old and need a place to live with green pastures with water and heated barns. The sanctuary also provides an education about the crisis facing the endangered elephants. It is the nations largest natural-habitat refuge to meet the needs of endangered elephants. They have 2700 acres of barns, corral and open space for the elephants roam.
Many of their elephants were born wild and were then brought to the sanctuary for safety. There are both Asian and African elephants. People can volunteer or visit the sanctuary. They can also give money to help buy supplies for the elephants. A person can also sponsor an elephant. The website has information on each individual elephant. Elephants are being hunted or put into circuses and zoos. They are endangered and they need a place, like the elephant sanctuary to care for them.

  10. The Elephant Sanctuary was founded in 1995, taking care of both African and Asian endangered elephants. Many elephants roam in peace in 2,700 acres within Tennessee. This specific sanctuary was made to give a home to elephants that are old, sick, or needy in a nice area where they can live. They are fed and monitored and given shelter from harsh weather. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee also exists to teach the people about these elephants and their difficult lives they live. The Elephant Sanctuary has received a four star rating from the largest charity evaluator, Charity Navigator. This organization is an interesting thing to support because Elephants aren’t normally seen in North America. It is also good to support this group because they teach people things interesting facts that people should know that would benefit the elephants and know that they are marvelous animals and should be taken care of.

  11. Habitat for Humanity

Millard and Linda Fuller founded the organization Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) in 1976. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds simple, decent, and affordable homes for low-income families around the world. Their mission is to help eliminate poverty housing and homelessness globally. Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 homes around the world, giving over one million people in more that 3,000 communities safe and adequate places to live. HFHI has hundreds of active affiliates in over 100 countries. This is in addition to the District of Columbia, all fifty states in the US, Guam and Puerto Rico. The Flower City Habitat for Humanity in Rochester, NY was founded in 1984. While they started with building one to two homes a year, they now build seven to ten houses every year and just finished their 170th Habitat house. I support Habitat for Humanity because I think that it is working for an important cause. There are many people around the world living in dangerous and inadequate conditions and I feel that it is important for people who are more fortunate to help out in any way that they can.

  12. Attorneys active in animal law founded the Animal Legal Defense Fund in 1979. ALDF fights to protect animals through the legal system. ALDF works for stronger enforcement of anti-cruelty laws and more humane treatment of animals in the US. Presently ALDF is supported by hundreds of attorneys and more than 100,000 members. ALDF works to protect animals by filing lawsuits to stop animal abuse and expand animal laws, providing free legal assistance to prosecutors handling cruelty cases, encouraging the government to enforce existing animal laws, and providing public education. ALDF has several primary programs including a Litigation Program that files lawsuits, a Criminal Justice Program, which works with law enforcement, and an Animal Law Program, which is dedicated to expanding the field of animal law through law schools and professionals.
Animals are a very important part of my life. Their rights are very important to me because of the cruel things happening to them everyday. There are very sick, disgusting people in the world and animals need our protection from them just like people. Animals cannot fight for their own rights so it is our job to fight for them. No living being should be allowed to be tortured or killed. We live in a sick world and if there is one thing that is the exception it is animals. They deserve our protection because they are the least deserving of cruelty.

Our group is presenting The Committee for Missing Children’s inc as our public relations project. This website has been running since 1991. The CMC has distributed over 2 billion images of missing children in elementary schools throughout the USA. This committee serves as a resource for parents of missing children in their search and recovery of their children. It also works in the areas of safety and prevention. The CMC believes that parents of missing and abducted children have a right to be involved in the search for their own children. And the site helps parents to better understand what they will soon be up against while learning how to work within the system.
This organization is one I care to support because the simple fact of the matter. Children, especially young ones, are very defenseless and once they are kidnapped or lost they are not only defenseless but also scared. I feel like if there is no one to truly care about the well being of these children and to help them find their ways back home it may never happen. A child only knows and is able to do so much.
I also really feel for the parents. A parent heart most wrench to lose their child and not know where they are, if they are okay, and if they will ever see them again. It is more then fair that they get as much help as they can so they can save their children and this committee aims to do just that.

  14. Habitat for Humanity (HFHI) is an organization founded in 1976. Habitat for Humanity enables thousands of people around the world to live in more comfortable and constructive homes. The HFHI in the Flower City area was founded in 1984 and over the first few years it was not very productive and successful, only building up to two houses a year. Yet now HFHI has grown so that seven to ten homes are built a year! Habitat is a worldwide movement, active in more than a hundred countries in addition to all fifty states in the U.S. HFHI has built more than 300,000 homes worldwide and provided for over one million people who live in unsafe environments or have inadequate housing. The organization has been so successful that now every twenty-six minutes a Habitat house is completed. I personally picked this organization as the one I care to support because I feel I would be contributing to a worthy cause. I feel like I would really be helping people around the world have more comfortable living situations. HFHI does not only build houses for families, it also is responsible for land acquisition, family selection, fundraising, public relations, and residential construction.

  15. For our public affairs project Deidre, Elaine and I are researching the Committee for Missing Children. Founded in 1991 by David C. Thelen. It began as a committee of twenty advisors that met to find new ways of increases the number of, and areas that, missing person posters were distributed. The first formal meeting was in Nashville, Tennesee in 1992. Since then they have held their first Parent Advocacy meeting in Vegas (1995), set up a European office in 1998, they then held their first combined Parent Advocacy meeting in 2000. The following year the company website went online enabling them to expand their horizon and reach more people. The purpose of the website is to advocate for parents of missing children by making resources available that can help them with their search both physically and with the law. They keep parents of the children aware of their rights as the parents of missing children so that they can take full advantage of the system and be involved instead of leaving it up to officials that will give up after a certain period of time. They have contacts with lawyers, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and various other non- profit organizations. The website is currently the largest educational and reference site on missing, exploited and abducted children in the world.

  16. We have chosen to support Autism Speaks, which raises money to fund autism research. It was created in 2005 by the vice chairman of General Electric, and has since raised millions of dollars for its cause (alongside three mergers, the National Alliance for Autism Research, Cure Autism Now, and Autism Coalition for Research and Education).

Annually, Autism Speaks hosts a major fund raiser on Long Island, inviting many celebrity fund raisers, most of whom have returned walk to walk. Names include Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart (who has hosted a separate telethon event for the cause), and Bruce Springsteen.

Naturally, the celebrity endorsements are attractive (Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart, and Jerry Seinfeld all in one night!?), but moreover, the cause, like similar causes relating to research in health, is a good one. It’s honest; it helps people whom haven’t been given an equal chance in life; it’s not simply “nice”, but it’s humane. It helps humanity (again, like other causes) in two ways. First, it can help the people suffering from autism. And it’s also the responsible thing to do as a person.

  17. The organization that I will be looking at and exploring is the Alzheimer’s Association. The organization started in 1979 when Jerome H. Stone and other families met together and started a federal effort to explore and understand the disease. The disease Alzheimer’s is something that affects your memory and behavior over time. Today the Alzheimer’s Association strives to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. This disease is close to my heart because my grandmother Daisy has suffered from this disease the past nine years. I know how it feels when people forget and start not to remember things because this has happened to my family and me. About six years ago my grandmother forgot my name, she knew I was still something in her life and she still answered to “grandma” but over time all that was lost. The Daisy I’ve knew the past nine years is different from the one I once knew, but I still continue to lover her with all my heart. If I can do anything in life it would be to help other grandsons not loose there grandmother and that is why I support the Alzheimer’s Association because they help all affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementia’s.

    Committee for Missing Children

The committee for Missing Children has been around since 1991 distributing images with the help of their photo partners of missing children resulting in the recovery of about 1200 missing children. It is a parent advocacy group that assists parents by providing them with the help they deserve and ensuring that their rights are protected. They gather and share information, serve as a clearinghouse for information and the laws about missing and abducted children and are also developing the largest web-based informational database on missing children. Through there safety and prevention program they distribute safety rules, posters and identity kits to schools and parents, and make them available for download from their website http://www.findthekids.com. Many non-profit child-find organizations have been created to assist parents in the search and recovery of their children, as well as work in the areas of safety and prevention.
While The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) provides many of the photos they distribute, there are many missing children that NCMEC has not provided for. Working with the Children's Help Center in Tampa, Florida, they will place photos sent to them by the Help Center on their site as soon as they receive them. their objective is to make ALL pictures of missing and abducted children available as soon as possible.

  20. The Habitat for Humanity seeks to destroy homelessness and poverty around the world. They don’t discriminate on race or religion but they all put an effort into building houses together to help families in need. It was founded by Millard Fuller along with his wife in 1976. The Habitat for Humanity operational headquarters are located in Americus, Georgia, USA while their administrative headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families that receive Habitat houses. There is an International Habitat for Humanity and also local Habitats as well. Board members control the International Habitat for Humanity and they are dedicated volunteers. Local Habitats are managed by its own local volunteer. The Habitat for Humanity helps needy families and also gives the families hope and this is why I support the organization.

  21. Autism Speaks
Autism Speaks was founded in February 2007, it's still a fairly young non-profit organization. Their mission is basically to change the lives of any person struggling with problem of autism. In about four they have grown to the largest advocate network for autistic individuals, they are supporters of sciences that will lead to treatments an maybe even a cure.
I'd like to support them because what they are doing is important, folks in our world today don't know how hard it could be to be autistic. Almost everyday I hear derogatory terms and making fun of autistic people, and I want to make it clear that my peers shouldn't treat others like that just because they are different than them. Also I like their methods of getting all the people together to make one loud voice heard.
Personally, I can't think of a better organization that should be supported greater.

200 words on National Children's Cancer Society

The National Children's Cancer Society was started in 1987 because they believe that every child with cancer deserves a chance to live. The NCCS is a non-profit organization who attempts to lighten the heavy load of financial stress that accompanies the major illness of cancer. Also they provide drugs and medical supplies to treatment facilities across the U.S to help treat children with cancer. Since NCCS was started they have managed to raise more than 51 million dollars for more than 28,000 children nation-wide. The organization has been so successful due to outreach and ongoing education programs and working closely with more than 200 hospitals across the U.S. Their mission is, “…to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and their families worldwide.” This is an important organization to me because I know the effects cancer has on families and what a difficult challenge it is to conquer and what a financial burden it can be. No child should have to deal with cancer and it’s sad that there is no cure for it so the fact that there are organizations like the NCCS that are there to help families through this difficult time makes it a foundation I would want to be a part of.

  25. The Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1984 and is designed to help animals find safe homes. They work with shelters to promote pet adoption, spay and neutering, and humane treatment of the animals. They also do workshops that educate about animal abuse and no-kill shelters. After hurricane Katrina, Best Friends stepped up and was the number one animal rescue organization and soon expanded to other locations around the United States. I am interested in researching this organization because I think that animal abuse is a really huge issue in our society. Domestic animals were bred to be human’s responsibility, so it is also their responsibility to be cared for appropriately. Animals deserve to be cared for and loved, and to live in a stable home, so we really want to support their cause. Their contribution to the world is something valuable, and I believe that it is important to educate the country about animal care, and to help animals who are homeless to find homes with people that will give them the care and love that they deserve.

    Best Friends Animal Society
The Best Friends Animal Society was founded in 1984, originating through retreat missions at the Process Church in Arizona. The “Best Friends Sanctuary” is now located near Kanab Utah. The Sanctuary houses nearly 2,000 animals. BFAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting animals that have become homeless. They have a “no-kill” policy, and through-out the 1990’s they adopted thousands of homeless animals. The number of animals killed in shelters has been cut in half, and the rate continues to drop. Their slogan is “No More Homeless Pets.” In 2008, an hour long series called “DogTown” was released, which documented BFAS’s ongoing work with homeless dogs. The organization also adopts cats, pigs, rabbits, birds, and other types of unwanted pets. They even take in horses- no animal is too much of a hassle. We want to support BFAS in their mission to find a home for all pets. It’s really sad to see a once loved animal given up by its family, even if they didn’t have much of a choice. These animals deserve to be loved, and BFAS gives them the ability to live out their lives in peace.

  28. The non-profit organization Friends of School of the Arts gives many opportunities to students in the school beyond school needs. If a child needs tap shoes, clothing, housing or anything of that sort Friends will help and do their best to make it happen. Children can come to the board with any problem and it will be reviewed by the board to see what can be done and if it is possible to achieve. They help children have the opportunity to do the master classes that this school provides which is such a big learning experience for anyone who intends on continuing in the performance aspect of the arts. The master classes teach children techniques and give great advice to all the kids who attend. They can help seniors with college application fees and many other things beyond that. At the outside of every event that School of the Arts holds there is a guitar case or violin case that Friends puts out to help raise money for Friends so they can provide these services. The reason why I chose this is because the organization goes on right in our school and I don’t think many people know about all they services and all they help they can provide. It would help get the word out that there is help if any students need it.

    Americares essay

The founder of Americares, Robert C. Macaulay, a paper broker from New Canaan, Conn, first started philanthropy in 1975. It started when a plane carrying Vietnamese orphans crashed, half of the children died and the pentagon announced that it would not have the resources to rescue the children for 10 days. It was then that Mr. Macaulay decided to act, he chartered a Boeing 747 to rescue the children and within 48 hours they were in California. He had to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay for the plane. Later in 1981 Pope John Paul II asked Robert to Rome, the Pope asked him to help bring medical supplies into Poland which at that time was under martial law at that time. The goal was to bring $50,000 worth of medicine into the country but by the time it was over $3.2 million had been airlifted into the country. With the astounding success in Poland in 1982 Americares was founded.
Today Americares is a non profit disaster relief and humanitarian organization. Doing work in many foreign countries and in the United states.

They do all of this and they are a non for profit organization. They help kids of all ages, they have many successful survival stories and they are very proud of what they do. Nearly “86% of families reported a loss of income due to their child’s diagnosis” which is just another reason for the NCCS decides to help out children with the illness. They also invite everyone to learn about the issues that are caused by cancer and how they could be dealt with in a less difficult manner. Cancer survivors, nurses, proud parents and social workers are all involved in helping the young children. The N.C.C.S does a terrific job at saving lives and making everyone’s life easier. I think this is important because they actually care and take time to get involved with these children. They are a non for profit organization and they still put forth enough effort to become worldwide.

I have connected with this foundation because i am a type one diabetic. hopefully a cure is found so i can live my life how i once had. that, and also many of my family members are diabetic and so are most of the teachers in this school. hopefully, a cure is found. personally, its not all that bad drinking diet soda and not eating sweets or junk food anymore.

  33. Best Friends animal society is a non-profit organization. Their simply philosophy is, “kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us.” In the beginning the organization noticed that the number of animals in shelters did not compare to the amount of adoptions despite the efforts of the shelters. The organization put in great effort to minimize the amounts of “unwanted” animals through effective spay and neuter programs. Other animals determined to be “unadoptable” were placed in loving homes. Through their No More Homeless Pets campaign, Best Friends assisted in lowering the amount of destroyed cats and dogs in shelters to approximately 5 million a year. Animals are taken into special care at Best Friends to train, and be taken care of before they are put up for adoption. They work alongside members of other human organizations, groups and individuals in effort to rehabilitate and save thousands of animals each year. To expand knowledge about the organization and what they do they have a magazine Best Friends. This organization is particularly interesting to me about because they are animal lovers and I am the same, no animal is “unadoptable” they all have love left in them no matter what.

The Coalition for the Homeless is a service organization that helps homeless people including men, women and children. They develop ways to deal with homelessness in New York City, working to end it and also to prevent it. It’s a resource for people who need a home and food to eat. They help train people for jobs and also have youth programs for kids to promote healing and empowerment. They have after school programs and summer camp.
They point out that in one night 390,000 people in New York City sleep in emergency shelters, 16,000 of which are children and there has been a sharp increase in the amount of homeless people in the past years. This organization provides direct service and also money to people so that they can buy basic necessities. The Coalition’s Eviction prevention Program helps families and individuals avoid becoming homeless. They also have a food program that provides to homeless or poor families every night.
This is an organization that I care to support because I feel it’s important for people to have a safe home to live in and a job to help support their families. It’s sad to think that so many people, including children are homeless and don’t always have a warm meal to eat. This organization has step forward to make a difference and it's a difference I hope to make one day too.

  35. Americares is a relief organization founded in 1982 dedicated to communities struck by natural disasters, poverty, etc. This was founded after Robert C. Macauly, a paper broker from Connecticut, had done several voluntary relief funds to Vietnam in 1975 to deliver supplies for orphans. Shortly before Americares was founded, Macauly had done big favors for people such as Pope John Paul II to provide medical supplies the people of Poland. In 1983 Americares provided aid to refugees from the Russian-Afghanistan war. In 1985 airlifts were sent to Ethiopia full with medicines, food and other supplies. Since its founding, over $10 billion of aid has been spent on over 147 countries. For every $100 donated to this organization, over $3,500 is spent on humanitarian relief, which include medicines, medical supplies, nutritional supplements and other relief efforts. About 98% of their resources are used on program services, to provide the maximum efficiency. The company operates with three distribution warehouses in Connecticut, Mumbai and Europe. They also operate smaller offices and clinics in Colombo, El Salvador, and Haiti.

This is an organization I care about because when a country is stricken by disaster and poverty, somebody must take action in helping society get back on its feet. When poverty strikes, somebody must be able to provide food for the world’s future. Americares is an organization that does such, and is a great choice to do a project on.

Coalition for the Homeless is a program that has helped try to prevent and immediately help homeless individuals and families by working in four areas, affordable housing, comprehensive health care, livable incomes and preserve each homeless person's civil rights. It began in 1981 when Robert Hayes filed a lawsuit on behalf of a man who was homeless in New York City. Through the lawsuit the homeless won shelter in New York City. The Coalition for the Homeless was incorporated in 1984. It was started in New York City, but has spread to Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Massachusetts, and Colorado. The goals are achieved by lawsuits, education, community organization, research and technical assistance. I think that homelessness is an important issue that needs to be helped to reduce and I think that Coalition for the Homelessness ways of achieving their goals are smart and the fact that they started in New York City, a city that has a high homelessness rate. They have only one goal, to end homelessness, but the way a group goes about doing that will determine their success. Through their project, “Back to School” where they dropped off backpacks and school supplies to all Manhattan storage locations, library branches, over 26 schools in New York City was able to hold backpack drives along with New York institutions like American Express. Coalition for the Homeless used websites like the Huffington Post to raise $10,000 which went towards supplying the school supplies to the children.

  37. Autism Speaks was founded by Suzanne and Bob Wright who has a grandchild with autism. It’s now grown into the nation’s largest autism organization; they fund a lot of causes, prevention, treatments, and cures. This organization is increasing awareness and provides advocates for individuals who have autism. Personally I have a heart for people with autism. Sometimes people with autisms focus becomes so intense on one thing that they become extremely near supernaturally good at it. The first autistic person I met was in the sixth grade. The boy’s name was Allen and he had been one of the children regularly picked out by his peers. My heath teacher pulled me to the side and asked me to be friend him; I started to get to know him and even left my own circle of friends to eat with him in lunch. I learned a lot from him took up for him in times of teasing and cheered him on when he danced at our schools talent show. This time in my life helped me to realize that having disabilities especially autism makes them significantly special, and sometimes they’re DISability just shows there ABILITY.

The Coalition for the Homeless began in 1981. This program was designed to help homeless people with shelter, food and even housing. The Coalition for the Homeless takes place in New York City. The Coalition helps about 3500 clients. Over eleven different programs are offered to those in need. These programs include, crisis intervention, grand central food program, eviction prevention program, client advocacy project, rental assistance program, scattered site housing program, coalition houses, bridge building residence, bound for success, camp homeward bound and the first step job training program. Through these programs the homeless is provided with immediate assistance food, over a thousand meals are given to the homeless every night, work clothes, school supplies, in some circumstances they have a one-time emergency grant in which they pay your rent, case management is provided for those on SSI or SSDI, provide those suffering from HIV/AIDs with apartments that provide constant medical attention. Also private apartments are provided for homeless individuals. Homeless children are also taken into consideration. Educational after school, summer day camps and 16 day sleep away sessions are provided. Lastly, job training for the unemployed.
I totally support this program. They are dedicated and give their all to helping the homeless and I truly commend them for that. Some many of us see someone homeless on the streets and turn our heads at them, when we don’t know what their situation is our how they got in that predicament. Too many of us just assume that they are drunken people or will use the money for drugs. Even the celebrities don’t donate as much as they should. I think it’s time to make a change in someone life and it starts with us.

The First Candle organization was founded in the early 1960s. It was then known as the National SIDS Foundation. They focused on helping families that experienced the death of a baby from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). They secured the first national funding available for SIDS research. In 1987, they formed an alliance with SIDS groups from all over the country. They are trying to eliminate SIDS. First Candle has helped save more than 25,000 babies lives in the past ten years. The SIDS rate dropped 60%. In 2002, the organization expanded. They began to focus also on stillbirth and other sudden unexpected infant deaths.
The First Candle organization is an organization that is based upon having helps with having a safe pregnancy and making sure that the child survives the first few years of their lives. First Candle wants to eliminate Stillbirth, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID). They plan to do so with research, education and advocacy. They have provided more than four million dollars to fund research projects. The main focus of First Candle is to help save lives.
I care to support this organization because I personally think that this is an amazing organization. People are very fortunate to have an organization like this. There are so many sudden unexpected infant deaths. Having people that are there for you to help prevent it is a blessing. I’m interested mainly because I have members of my family who have went through the process of losing their baby due to SUID. I’ve seen how it has affected them as a person and their lives. First Candle is a good organization and there should be more awareness and more people should do things to help raise awareness and get involved.

Most students are able to participate in the arts education with financial support from friends. The Friends of School of the Arts receives funding from fundraising events and also grants. Friends focus their energies on making student success a mutual goal. Providing students with college application fees, dance shoes and dance wear, money for trips having to do with the students’ academic major. Friends give the students opportunities like taking them on college visits. This organization is one that I would support because it gives students a chance to be involved in their school community who has financial issues. I don’t think that a student should be limited because of their financial disability. This organization can really benefit students and give them opportunity’s they never thought they would have the chance to do.

A student can apply on their own or they can be recommended by a teacher or counselor. The nineteen board members then review the applicant and decide what will be provided for each individual. The board members range from CEOs and Real Estate Consultants to Teachers and two student representatives.
Friends of School of the Arts hosts events like Klea Blackhurst performances and Jazz concerts to raise money for this organization. All the funds raised go directly to the students.
I chose this organization because it is something that is close to home. This organization provides support for students in our own school. It is an organization that I chose to support in little ways when I can. They are very important to the School of the Arts community and those students who need their support. The Marine Mammal Center was started in 1975 to protect marine mammals that are not protected when Federal law protection fails. Using volunteer labor and donations from the public this organization is able to rescue hurt animals, educate the populations about conservation and ways to protect wild animals. Education funds also help the society become more aware of events happening to marine mammals, and who to contact to stop what is occurring. The education funding also is used to find out new ways to help the animals- preventing injuries from happening, and curing the animals that have been taken to animal hospitals. Nearly 10% of animals helped by this organization are harmed as consequence to human actions, which leads to their desire to inform people about their responsibility to protect the life and environment around them. The research that the organization does and funds is published in scientific journals so that those around the world can be informed. This organization provides help along “600 miles of northern and central California coastline.” Each year they help about 600 animals, all different sorts of marine animals, and help them so that they can return to their home in the ocean.
Volunteers can help through donations, but also can help actively by rescuing animals and helping heal and rehabilitate them.

About 700 animals are reported to the center each year. Rescuers are specialized in animal care and try to release them back into their habitat as soon as possible. Keeping the wild mentality in the animals is an important part in ensuring a normal life, especially because they aren't used to interactions with humans.

In 2008, there were approximately 33.4 million people around the world living with HIV/AIDS, including 2.1 million children under age 15. The virus attacks the immune system and leaves the body vulnerable to a variety of life-threatening infections and cancers. HIV has been found in saliva, tears, nervous system tissue and spinal fluid, blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. However, only blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk generally transmit infection to others. You can get this through sex, blood, and breast milk. AIDS begins with HIV infection. People infected with HIV may have no symptoms for 10 years or longer, but they can still transmit the infection to others during this symptom-free period. If the infection is not detected and treated, the immune system gradually weakens and AIDS develops.

This hospital has treated children around the world from more than seventy countries. Many doctors come ask the help of St. Jude in their toughest cases. St. Jude is also associated with many other hospitals around the nation to further its efforts beyond its own physical walls. All medically eligible patients who are accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family’s ability to pay. Doctors Without Borders provided aid in almost sixty countries in the world. The citizens of these countries own survival is threatened by armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. Doctors Without Borders gives medical aid and equal treatment to every person who live in these countries, many of times the countries are impoverished and suffering a great deal. Doctors Without Borders concentrates on humanitarian principles based on medical ethics and impartiality. Under these morals the MSF has met success and aided many people in medical need in locations in the world that could easily be ignored and neglected. I like the organization because I believe it has great positive impact on the world. As a United States citizen it is easy to forget about the third world countries that have horrible disease epidemics, warfare, and many other things that cause the countries to be in medical turmoil. The doctors and other staff members who work with Doctors Without Humanity are doing a very unselfish act and are helping humanity a great deal. These people are the ones who are really into the medical field to help people and are not just in it for the prestige and money. The Doctors Without Borders is an organization that many people should support because they are helping so many people throughout the entire world.

Best Friends Animal Society has a slogan called “no more homeless pets”. In the late 1980s about 17 million cats and dogs were being killed in shelters every years, best Friends wanted to change this fact completely. Their main effort is to get dogs and cats that were considered unadoptable in to nice homes. They use spay and neuter programs to help reduce the animal population. The number now for killed animals in shelters went down to five million but the Best Friends Animal Society ultimate goal is zero animals. The reason why I support this organization is because they help the animals that cannot help themselves. They help cats and dogs (my favorite animals) that have been beaten, abused, and abandoned. Those animals deserve better than what they were given. If there is a bad owner of any animal they should have that animal taken away from them. Pets are their to be mans best friends; dogs and cats that are peoples companions

For part of my life I would like to volunteer for an organization like Doctors Without Borders. I think it is important to help people who do not have the medical opportunities that we take for granted here in the United States. Children die in Africa from minor things that could be cured in minutes, but because they do not have the resources and medicine people die more easily. This is something that might not affect us in the US but it greatly affects people all over the world, and it is something in our control to help.

The committee for missing children is a website and center used to place missing and exploited children pictures up, in the hope of being able to find the missing child. Parents use this website to their benefit to reach out to other individuals to be aware of their missing children. The organization that works in parallel to this committee in New York is the National Center for missing & exploited Children. This Center was created after series of events, occurred dealing with the disappearance of many youth. Such as in 1979 when six year old Etan Patz was never seen again one day on his way to school. After more events such as this one continued to repeats itself the Committee for Missing Children was in desperate need to be invented.
The reason why I have decided to join this organization is because children are out future. Being that I was a young child once, there is nothing worse than being without my mother or family. I would hope that if I were lost that someone would care enough to try and to find me, and if they are not able to at least they tried. As the committee continues to grow less and less children are being kidnap, and if they are more are being found, and continue to make a difference in out world.

First of all, elephants are great. They are beautiful giant creatures and deserve to be on this planet until the end of time. Which is why The Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee is important to me. Because it’s mission is just that! It all started in the March of 1995. “Phase I” includes a heated barn, a 200-acre steel pipe and cable elephant corral, and a 222-acre perimeter “people” fence. “Phase II”, completed December 1999, including the completion of a 6 stall, 9000 square foot, “state-of-the-art” elephant barn to the facility. Expansions were finally completed during the October of 2001. Now there’s access to over 1000 acres of land for the elephants.
The people of this organization are extremely passionate about showing respect for these wonderful animals. They want to provide the ideal captivity for an elephant. Elephants often walk 30 to 50 miles everyday, so them just kept in chains alone is down right unfair! That is their mission, to provide the freedom these elephants deserve. This is a lot of land to maintain. Basically this organization needs support. As much as possible. So people! Support these beautiful unique giant creatures that NEED to be here FOREVER.

  58. “The program's overall goals are to find ways to restore the body's ability to make insulin and reduce the risk of complications from type 1 diabetes, either through the Regeneration or Replacement of insulin-producing beta cells.” Basically the intentions of this organization are to provide a service that would make it possible for diabetics to reproduce their own insulin (a cure to diabetes.) The service is much unlike others who would look to find cheaper solutions to producing insulin and improving the effectiveness or the painlessness of blood testing for people with type 1 diabetes.
“This therapeutic area aims to stop the immune system response that causes type 1 diabetes and is committed to delivering immune therapies to people at all stages of type 1 diabetes - in order to prevent the disease, delay the need to take insulin, or slow the disease's progression.” The organization also works to prevent diabetes and increase the bodies immunities.
This organization means a lot to me because a large portion of my friends suffer from diabetes and i have seen the pain that it causes on the people who deserve it the least.

  59. The Best Friends Animal Society is a non-profit organization was founded in 1984. They are a very widely know animal rescue group. Providing other addition services like neutering, and finding homes for the animals have made them widely known. Their most known aspect though is their Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. This is where they promote one of the largest no-kill safe spot for rejected animals. They initially started in the 70’s by saving animals from shelters that were going to euthanize them. Their goal is to create societies where no animals are euthanized.
Not only do they save animals from being killed in shelters but they also carry through and find homes for numerous amounts of animals. They are adamant in finding good homes and families that will treat the animal right and keep them long-term. They hold many fundraising benefits and help out different communities. They assisted in rescuing four thousand animals and transported two thousand others. I chose to support this organization because I love animals and they deserve to be treated right. The idea of shelters euthanizing animals because they don’t have space or the animal was there for too long is horrible.

  60. The elephant sanctuary of Tennessee was founded in 1995 in Hohenwald, Tennessee. It’s the nation’s largest natural habitat refuge spanning 2700+ acres. The sanctuary's facilities include a heated barn for the winter, a quarantine barn for sick elephants, a 200 acre steel pipe and corral, and a 222 acre perimeter "people" fence. It is home to many elderly, sick, and needy elephants. Both Asian and African elephants call the sanctuary of Tennessee their home. Elephants are an endangered species that are trying to be preserved in the sanctuary and many others like it around the world. Their goal is not to have the elephants entertain people, but to live like elephants. About 14 elephants are current residents of the sanctuary. That’s a lot of elephants; the elephant sanctuary of Tennessee is a non for profit organization and need every penny they can get. You can donate to the sanctuary on the website or even sponsor and elephant. The website has individual profiles on each of their elephants and allows you to get a sense of their personality .
